What are some of your favorite works for violin and orchestra?

Here are mine:

The Lark Ascending - Ralph Vaughan Williams
Tzigane - Maurice Ravel
Scottish Fantasy - Max Bruch
Concertos by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Korngold, Brahms...

So it's technically originally for a quartet, but we played an arrangement of Molly on the Shore in my high school orchestra one year and it was basically everyone's favorite piece that we ever did, ever. In terms of solo/concerto stuff specifically, I enjoy the Devil's Trill Sonata (listening! I am too garbage at the violin to ever be able to play it).

Sibelius violin concerto! It's sad that he only wrote one, but it's a great one.

Interesting question! Bartok Violin Concerto no 2 & the Stravinsky concerto are my two all-time favourites, but I also love the Sibelius & Brahms concertos, as well as Brandenburg 4 (with recorders) & the Four Seasons. I seem to recall also really liking the John Adams & Alban Berg concertos, but my CD collection has been in storage since we moved so I haven't heard them in a long while. Wikipedia reminds me to add Arvo Part's Fratres.

Late to the party with Dvořák's Violin Concerto (Op 53), and Vittori Monti's Csárdás if I'm feeling schmaltzy.

REALLY late to the party.

For me, the Sibelius, Dvorak, and Brahms violin concerti are up there, along with the Bruch Scottish Fantasy. Among more recently composed concerti, I love Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's violin concerto. An underplayed favorite of mine from the Romantic era: Alexander Campbell Mackenzie's Pibroch Suite.

The Pibroch Suite isn't on YouTube, but there are samples here: http://www.cedillerecords.org/albums/scottish-fantasies-for-violin-and-orchestra

If I can cheat a little, I actually like the Brahms double concerto even more than his violin concerto.
